Easdale Island
PA34 4TB Scotland The Easdale Folk Museum aims to show a snapshot of life on Easdale Island as it was in the 19th Century, when the Island was the centre of the Scottish slate industry. Now still waters in the quarries cover the rocks where hammers rang, gunpowder exploded and the sound of the pumping engines could be heard, but the Museum re-creates the atmosphere of life on the Island when the Easdale Slate Quarries Company was at its prime. Each display reflects a particular aspect of life on the Island. The subjects of the displays include: The Volunteers Growing up on Easdale Communications Public Health Entertainment Housing Winning the Slate and many others?? The museum was set up in 1980 by the island's owner at the time, Chris Nicholson. The curator, Jean Adams MBE, is a direct descendant of a quarrier's family. Open:April - October Mon-Fri, Sun 10:30am-5:30pm, 4:30pm Sun Cost: |
